Films are shown in the auditorium at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.
Admission is free and open to the public. Seating is limited to the first 250 guests.
The age ranges listed below are recommendations.

Take a break from the Texas heat and join us for The Modern Kids – Summer Flicks Series! Share the art of the screen with your children as they watch stories unfold and ideas form in delightful and innovative films. The bonus for seeing these films at the Modern is the opportunity to visit the galleries before or after and experience the wonder of the art as stories unfold and ideas form in paintings, sculptures, installations and videos found in works from the permanent collection on the first floor or the fascinating stories told in a spectacular variety of media in the special exhibition, William Kentridge: Five Themes on the second floor.

Make a full day of creative activities at the Modern. Beautiful sketchbooks made of materials that inspire are available for children of all ages free at the front desk any day of the week and the perfect partner to the films showing for the Summer Flicks Series.

Tuesday, August 11, 10 am

The Ballad of Mulan - 7 min
Mulan disguises herself as a man to join the army in her father’s place. She hides her true identity while showing remarkable skill as a warrior and later becomes a famous general. Mulan continues to be an inspiration to females for her courage.

Monkey King Wreaks Havoc in Heaven - 22 min
Monkey King fights epic battles to prove to the Emperor of Heaven that he is more than equal to any of the celestial warriors or ministers. As Monkey King runs amok, the supreme Buddha reigns in the rampaging simian with the strangest of wagers.

Folk Tales from around the World: Yoshi - 9 min
In a retelling of the Japanese folktale The Stonecutter, a humble artisan becomes a prince, the sun, a cloud and a rock before discovering he’s most content when he’s simply himself—a craftsman who makes beautiful lanterns.

Ish - 7 min
With a little encouragement from his sister, Ramon discovers that creativity is about a lot more than getting things “right.” Combining the sparseness of fable with the potency of parable, the creator of The Dot shines a bright beam of light on the need to kindle and tend our creative flames.

Harold and the Purple Crayon - 144 min
Based on the classic book, these adventures star Harold, an inventive and curious toddler with thoughts, desires and feelings typical of any child his age. In his Crayon World, Harold can muse on questions that all young children naturally wonder about, and he can come up with his own answers.

The Velveteen Rabbit - 87 min
Based on the best-selling classic book, Toby’s father has packed away in ice his grief over the death of his wife. When Toby is sent to stay with his very proper and somewhat forbidding grandmother over the Christmas holidays, he does not know what to do with himself. Then he discovers an attic filled with toys from the past and an unopened present from his angel mother. Inside the box is a velveteen rabbit that opens up the world of imagination for Toby. Rabbit along with Swan and Horse fill Toby’s world with exciting animated adventures. Their love and insights help Toby melt the heart of his grandmother, who calls his father home. Their world reaches a crisis when Toby contracts Scarlet Fever and his beloved rabbit must be burned. Through this loss Toby and the grownups in his life come to realize the importance of family and the power of love to make us real.

Swaying Giants - 27 min
A documentary about a huge spectacle in Catalonia—the Human Giants. Sisters Laia, age 9, and Maria, age 7, have been practicing climbing these human towers for as long as they can remember, and they want more than anything to climb in the competition.

Lokum: The Turkish Delight - 19 min
Featuring kitchen characters, Lokum the Turkish delight, Uncle Hulusi the coffee grinder, Aunty Sirriye the coffee pot, Cuppy the coffee cup, Birdy the mural clock bird, and Makineto the coffee machine. Lokum is a fugitive among the kitchen’s other residents. One day a coffee machine which can grind and cook all kinds of coffee is brought in. As that may mean that the services of Hulusi and Sirriye may no longer be required, Lokum and Cuppy are furious. One day Lokum gets locked up in the heated up electrical oven. Makineto short circuits himself, blows the fuse and saves Lokum. Everybody mourns for Makineto. A week later Makineto has been repaired but his Turkish coffee department is not working so Hulusi and Sirriye keep their jobs.

Folktales from Around the World: The Bear Prince - 12 min
A Mexican tale about a spirit that turns a prince into a bear. When the bear marries a woodcutter’s daughter, he reveals his secret and exacts a promise that she will never tell. In a fit of anger, she reveals it, setting off an extraordinary quest.

The Magic Ball - 27 min
Children offer us a magical and creative insight into their world. This film celebrates children from many different places around the world - Bali, Czech Republic, Mexico, USA, India, France, the Caribbean and Australia. Our hosts, Ashlee and Ayden are guided by the magician, Shamani Azi in their travels around the world where they witness the dancing, music and adventure these children offer.

The Happy Duckling - 9 min
An animated adventure set in a pop-up book world. Assembled and led by writer/director Gili Dolev, a team of students from two rival universities in Dundee, Scotland sketched their design and animation muscles to create this film in only nine months. Accompanied by a whimsical score from composer Mick Cooke of Belle and Sebastian, the film follows the antics of a young boy in his struggles against a STACKING DUCK! In this pop-up book world, expect the unexpected. Surprises aplenty behind every flap opened and every tab pulled.

La Lune - 7 min
A couple living on top of a bizarre hourglass and under a tree discover the moon accidentally for the first time. The woman’s desire to reach and obtain the moon will lead them to experience things that they have never gone through before. In the end, they would discover new things about themselves and new truth about the world they thought they knew.

The Diary of Anne Frank - 180 min
Following the Nazi invasion of Amsterdam, 13-year-old Anne and her family go into hiding in the confines of an attic. Anne’s remarkable account of their lives, their growing fear of discovery, their deplorable living conditions and even the blooming of her first love are intimately portrayed in this extraordinary portrait of humanity.

Going to School in India - 76 min
A celebration of school told through the eyes of a child who goes to school under different circumstances. Highlights India’s extreme landscape and the indomitable spirits of children. Includes five 8-minute films: Going to School in a Tribe; Going to School on a Boat; Going to School in the Lake; Going to School on the Streets; Going to School in a Monastery.

Dragon Hunters - 80 min
Zoe is a girl who loves stories about valiant knights battling dragons, and who dreams of going on a dragon hunt one day. Meanwhile, her uncle and guardian, fearing that the World Gobbler, the most fearsome dragon of all time, will soon awaken, decides that she should be sent away to a safe haven. Zoe has other ideas. Eager to help her uncle find a brave knight to face the fearsome beast, she sneaks off in search of a hero like those she reads about in legends. She meets the quick-talking Gwizdo and strong but gentle Lian-Chu, who have been trying unsuccessfully to eke out a living as dragon hunters. Convinced they are the heroes she has been seeking; Zoe is overjoyed when they accept the mission to hunt down World Gobbler. Gwizdo, however, has no desire to actually fight a dragon, but Lian-Chu is up for the challenge and, together with Zoe, they set off on an exciting and perilous journey to save the world from the most terrifying creature of all. Dragon Hunters features richly detailed and beautifully rendered 3D computer animation that combines futuristic medieval imagery with an imaginative universe of floating landscapes. Packed with humor, adventure and fantastical creatures, the film is an uplifting tribute to the power of friendship and self-belief.

Includes three shorts: The Scarecrow Walks At Midnight — There’s something funny about Jodie and Mark’s grandparents’ farm, but nobody’s laughing, especially when twelve strange new scarecrows scare more than just the crows! Don’t Go To Sleep Matt Amsterdam wishes his family were different until he wakes up from a nap in the attic to find that things are suddenly very different. Calling All Creeps — Ricky Beamer hopes for revenge when he puts a mean girl’s phone number in a personal ad. But when he starts getting scary midnight calls, he’s the one getting the creeps!

Goosebumps: Return of the Mummy - 66 min
Includes three titles: Return Of the Mummy — Gabe visits his archaeologist uncle in Egypt just in time to watch him unearth the tomb of a great prince which might be exciting if disturbed mummies didn’t seek revenge on whoever wakes them from the dead! Don’t Wake Mummy — Jeff Carter doesn’t really want to hug the 4,000-year-old mummy he received from his daddy, especially when the vengeful ragman rises from its sarcophagus! You Can’t Scare Me! — Frustrated friends Eddie and Hat decide to scare a show-off pal with Mud Monsters at Muddy Creek. But their dirty deed backfires!
